Coupons.com and CashStar founder brings experience taking a company public and leading another to acquisition to the enterprise commerce platform
OREM, UT, UNITED STATES, October 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ — pmtbox, the enterprise commerce platform that unifies payments, risk and data for merchants, today announced that Steven Boal has joined its board of directors. Boal founded Quotient Technology (formerly Coupons.com) in 1998 and led it as CEO and board chair for 24 years, including its listing on the New York Stock Exchange. He also founded and chaired digital gifting company CashStar, which was acquired by Blackhawk Network in 2017.
Boal joins Tandem Ventures founding partner Alex Bean and pmtbox founder Wayne Hamilton, who were added to the pmtbox board in April when the company closed a $15 million seed round led by Tandem Ventures, reported to be the largest seed raise in Utah in the past decade.
Much of Boal’s career has been spent building systems where value changes hands in ways that invite abuse. At Coupons.com, his team spent its first several years developing the security and print controls that manufacturers required before they would accept a digital coupon as a substitute for paper, and the company went on to serve brands and retailers including Procter & Gamble, General Mills, Unilever, Clorox, CVS and Dollar General. At CashStar, he built the team that delivered a platform that let retailers such as The Home Depot, CVS/pharmacy and Papa John’s sell and manage digital gift cards.
Pete Kledaras, co-founder and CTO of pmtbox, and Boal worked together at CashStar, where Kledaras built the company’s payments and fraud management technology. One of CashStar’s hallmark innovations was serving as the risk-bearing merchant of record for 350 global retailers, enabling their highest-risk digital transactions.
“I was in Maine building CashStar’s payments infrastructure while Steven chaired the company from Mountain View, so I’ve seen how he operates when real money is on the line,” said Kedaras. “Merchants have spent years treating fraud and chargebacks as a cost someone else sets for them, and as an annoying hurdle for consumers. Steven understands why that has to change, and he’ll push us as we move further into the enterprise.”
“Most merchants treat payments as a rate they negotiate once, and then they add up what they lose to fraud, chargebacks and disputes and find the real cost is far higher. They often don’t even realize how conversions are impacted,” said Boal. “Wayne and Pete have worked that problem from the operator’s side for years, and it shows in how pmtbox is built. That’s why I wanted to be involved.”
Boal is CEO and board chair of Salt Lake City-based Matia Mobility, maker of the Tek RMD M1, a compact mobility platform that lets people with spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis and other conditions sit, stand and move at eye level. The device is sold in 23 countries and is approved for purchase through the VA, Medicare and private insurance. He has been a regular guest lecturer at the Stanford Graduate School of Business and has served on several nonprofit boards. Earlier in his career, Boal was vice president and head of global emerging markets at J.P. Morgan. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the State University of New York at Albany.
