The Uptown attraction is reimagining reality with an upgraded space and new illusions that will challenge perceptions
CHARLOTTE, N.C., Oct. 14, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Museum of Illusions today announced it is reimagining reality at its Charlotte location with the opening of five all-new and two enhanced illusion experiences. Over the past several weeks, the Museum of Illusions’ team has been hard at work behind the scenes, bringing to life a refreshed design that elevates the space and the guest experience. Whether you’re experiencing Museum of Illusions for the first or for the 20th time, there’s something for everyone at the newly enhanced Charlotte location.

Combining entertainment and education in a format all ages can enjoy, Museum of Illusions opened its Charlotte location at 601 S. Tryon St. in December 2022, filling the 6,000-square-foot space with a multitude of mind-bending exhibits. Since opening, the museum has welcomed over 630,000 visitors – and with that success, the team felt it was the right moment to refresh and revamp the experience. The museum continues to host visitors and locals alike for an interactive escape inside Ally Charlotte Center.
“Charlotte has become one of our most-visited museums since we opened, and we’ve kept it evolving with seasonal updates along the way,” said Kim Schaefer, CEO of Museum of Illusions. “This renovation takes that a big step further. We’re adding five new exhibits that Charlotte has never seen before and upgrading two guest favorites, so, there’s plenty waiting that you haven’t experienced yet.”
Reopening October 15, the museum now includes five all-new exhibits:
- Infinity Dodecahedron – Making its Charlotte debut, this 12-sided mirrored chamber uses layered reflections and LED lighting to conjure an illusion of infinite space, scale, and shifting color and symmetry.
- Zoetrope – A sculpture spins beneath a precisely timed strobe light, and the interplay of motion and flash creates the illusion that a single form has multiplied and come to life –a modern twist on animation inspired by patterns found throughout nature.
- Weightless Matter – Objects appear suspended in mid-air with no visible support, using specialized glass and lighting to defy the brain’s built-in expectations about gravity and mass.
- Kinegram – A finely striped overlay glides across a fragmented graphic, transforming a completely flat, still image into what looks like complex, animated movement.
- Moody Chameleon – As ambient light shifts across the exhibit, a chameleon graphic appears to change color and melt into its surroundings, revealing how the eye reads contrast and color.
In addition to these exciting, all-new illusions, Museum of Illusions has refreshed and enhanced two of its most popular attractions:
- Reverse Room (American Diner) – Inspired by the classic diners that once lined Charlotte’s streetcar suburbs and highways – chrome-trimmed, neon-lit counters where mill workers, night owls, and travelers all pulled up a stool at any hour – this newly refreshed exhibit reimagines that all-American scene upside down.
- Building Illusion – Inspired by the semi-detached duplex homes that filled in Charlotte neighborhoods through the 20th century – an affordable middle ground between house and apartment, offering families their own entrance while sharing a wall next door – this refreshed exhibit gets a face-lift with a more traditional duplex façade.
To celebrate the reopening of its refreshed Uptown location, Museum of Illusions Charlotte is giving guests a few reasons to visit. Before the official opening, the Book Early Offer lets guests lock in buy-one-get-one-free tickets ahead of opening day when they purchase through book.moicharlotte.com. Then, once the doors officially open, the Grand Opening Offer keeps the celebration going with 20% off tickets for the museum’s first four weeks, from October 15 through November 19.
Museum of Illusions’ team of Illusion Experts are always on hand to make sure you capture the best photo, no matter what the exhibit. Museum of Illusions Charlotte is open Sunday through Thursday from 10am – 9pm ET and Friday and Saturday from 10am – 10pm, with general admission starting at just $30 for adults and $26 for children ages 5-12.
